VW Golf III - (another) Driver's side electric window problem
Posted by Herbie on Wednesday, 31st August 2005 at 07:25 PM

Hi

After browsing through the list archive it appears that I'm not the
only one to suffer from Golf electric window problems!

I have a Golf mark 3 (1993). On and off, I have had a problem with my
driver's side electric window for quite a few years now. The switch
for the driver's side electric window does not operate the window - no
response whatsoever. However, I can operate the window by using my key
in the driver's side door lock (this suggests to me that the motor
still works). The regulator was replaced about 5 months ago (by a VW
dealership) and the window 'worked for a while' with the switch. I
took the car back to the garage thinking that the work they carried
out was still under warranty, but now they are telling me that due to
water penetrating the door membrane a part of the motor has become
affected and that they would need to replace the whole motor at a cost
of around £450.00!! I am confused and also a bit worried about being
fleeced, can anybody shed any light on my situation? Is the garage
telling me everything? Is there a cheaper way for me to get the
problem fixed? The car isn't worth any more than £1.5k so I'm loathe
to spend nearly a third of it's value on fixing an electric window
problem.

By the way, the passenger side window works without problem.

Cheers
Herbie
